“My Mulan” is a high-caliber fantasy dance drama in North America inspired by the story of the ancient Chinese heroine, Hua Mulan. This show is aimed at empowering the minds and spirits of all that witness it by weaving the past and the present, merging the hearts of two young women, and connecting eastern and western cultures.
It uses creative techniques to connect Muzi, the modern dancer looking for inner strength, and Mulan, the heroine of ancient legend. “My Mulan” re-interprets the classic story of Mulan into contemporary times to bring you an extraordinary and exciting “My Mulan” performance that has never been seen before.
“It tells the story of a modern-day girl, Michelle, finding inner resilience, kindness, love, and courage from the legendary character of Mulan as she ventures out into the world,” said Lin Li, director of “My Mulan.”
It bolsters a star cast of renowned dancers from Canada, China, and the United States, specializing in jazz, Hip-hop, martial arts, drama, and other dance forms.
This year, renowned professional dancers Lijun Zhou and Kealan McLaughlin lead the performance. Ms. Zhou graduated from Beijing Dance Academy and is currently a teacher and choreographer at the Capital Normal University of China. She represented Chines in the closing ceremony of the Birmingham World Games to perform the solo dance “Sun God Bird” and has won numerous international dance awards.
She partnered with a well-known ballet dancer Mr. McLaughlin. He graduated from the National Ballet Academy of Canada and is a Principal Dancer at the Estonian National Ballet. He has starred in numerous well-known ballets, including Onegin, The Nutcracker, Cinderella, and Romeo and Juliet. In “My Mulan”, McLaughlin plays the role of the General.
The pandemic has presented challenges for all of us, but we have all emerged from it stronger and more compassionate than before. This March, My Mulan successfully raised $3200 for Yee Hong Wellness Foundation. In addition, a portion of the proceeds would be donated to support “Scout Canada”. My Mulan’s cast and crew members showcase the bravery and fearlessness of our youth and uplift the audience with a universal message of hope and love.
Member of Parliament of ScarboroughAcgincourt Jean Yip came to the theatre to watch the dance show and spoke highly of the performance. She said she thoroughly enjoyed this incredible show and loved how diverse the cast was. She hopes more people will see this annual show next year!
