The Centre for New Immigrant Well-being (CNIW) is pleased to announce the launch of Senior Speak, an innovative program designed to empower seniors in healthcare communication. This initiative is made possible through the generous support of the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP).
Senior Speak aims to address the communication challenges often faced by seniors in healthcare settings, particularly within immigrant communities. Through workshops, resources, and community engagement, the program will provide seniors with the tools and confidence to effectively communicate their needs and preferences to healthcare providers.
“We believe that everyone deserves to have a voice in their healthcare,” says Maggie Han, the executive director of CNIW. “Senior Speak will help seniors navigate the healthcare system with confidence and ensure their voices are heard, especially those who may face language or cultural barriers.”
The program will focus on:
- Communication Skills Development: Workshops will cover active listening, assertive communication, and asking effective questions, with consideration for language and cultural differences.
- Health Literacy: Seniors will learn how to access and understand health information, including medical terminology and treatment options, in a way that is culturally sensitive and accessible.
- Advocacy: The program will empower seniors to advocate for themselves and others in healthcare settings, navigating cultural nuances and potential language barriers.
- Community Building: Senior Speak will create opportunities for seniors from diverse backgrounds to connect and share their experiences, fostering a sense of belonging and support.
The New Horizons for Seniors Program is a federal grant and contribution program that supports projects that help seniors stay active and engaged in their communities.
